South Dakota Deer
Our South Dakota Mule Deer hunts are nothing short of World Class. We hunt highly managed private property in the central portion of the state during the peak of the rut. Hunters can expect to see 20-40 bucks per day. In 2009 the average score of the Mule deer killed was 186” with six bucks being taken that were over 190”. Mule Deer tags must be applied for by late April. The late April drawing is generally a 70% draw for non-residents. If you miss the April deadline then you can apply in the July draw. Non-resident hunters who apply in July have about a 20% chance of drawing the Mule Deer permit. This is not a physically demanding hunt. Our primary method of hunting these properties is glassing from rolling hill vantage points and putting stalks on the bucks we decide are trophy quality. This hunt is very easy however hunters should be prepared to shoot 200-400 yards.
We have some great Whitetail hunting opportunity on these properties also. Hunters can expect to see 10-20 bucks per day and have opportunities at 130”-180” class deer. We generally hunt the Whitetails in box stand blinds and occasionally do a spot and stalk. The Whitetail permits are 100% draw and generally there are left-over permits right up until the beginning of the season. Mule deer hunters can purchase one of these permits and also take a Whitetail buck for a trophy fee.
The archery hunting is truly unbelievable. If you want an opportunity at Pope and Young Mule Deer then this is the hunt for you. Archery hunters can expect multiple stalking opportunities each day on Pope and Young bucks. Archery permits are over-the-counter and are valid for either Mule Deer or Whitetail Deer. The property we hunt does have great Whitetails and we will allow archery hunters to shoot either species.
